Exploring the Ford Explorer EV with Bart Busschots

Description:

In this episode, I continue my discussion with Bart about his test drive of the Ford Explorer EV, exclusive to Europe. Bart considers it as a potential replacement for his Tesla Model 3 and explores options like the Polestar 3 and Volkswagen ID.7.

We discuss Bart's impressions of the Explorer's design, interior practicality, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, comparing them to Tesla's offerings. He enjoys the responsive driving experience, noting similarities in acceleration and handling to his Model 3, though he wishes for stronger regenerative braking.

We touch on space and cargo considerations, promising to revisit them with the upcoming Ford Capri EV, which Bart is excited about for its luxury and comfort. Listeners can expect further updates on Bart's car explorations and his insights on photography and tech.

[00:00:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Hello everyone and welcome to Kilowatt a podcast about Electric Vehicles, Renewable Energy,

[00:00:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Autonomous Driving and much, much more.

[00:00:27] [SPEAKER_01]: My name is Bodhi and I am your host and on today's episode we are going to talk once again

[00:00:31] [SPEAKER_01]: to Bart Busschots.

[00:00:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Bart was lucky enough to drive the Ford Explorer EV.

[00:00:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Now we mentioned this in the interview but we don't have the Ford Explorer EV here in

[00:00:44] [SPEAKER_01]: the US.

[00:00:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Despite the fact that the Ford Explorer is a super popular vehicle here in the United States.

[00:00:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Now just in case you are not familiar with this series that we've been doing with Bart since

[00:00:55] [SPEAKER_01]: the beginning of the year, Bart lives in Ireland.

[00:00:58] [SPEAKER_01]: He's been looking for a new vehicle to replace his Model 3.

[00:01:01] [SPEAKER_01]: He has narrowed his search down to the Polestar 3.

[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_01]: The Volkswagen ID 7 and the Ford Capri, which the Ford Capri isn't even out yet but the

[00:01:12] [SPEAKER_01]: Ford Explorer EV has a lot of the same features and they share the same or similar

[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_01]: design language.

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_01]: So what Bart decided he was going to do is he's going to go and he's going to test drive

[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_01]: the Ford Explorer EV and he was going to see if he liked it so that he would know,

[00:01:30] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, get a little bit of a glimpse into what the Ford Capri would be like which

[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_01]: would be a smaller vehicle.

[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Bart compares the Explorer EV and the Ford Capri kind of in, you know, they compare to

[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_01]: the Model Y in the Model 3 in the interview.

[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_01]: But before we get to that interview, we have some Patreon members to thank and we're

[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_01]: going to start with Rolando Bruce C Howard, Isaiah Bruce W Steve, Jerbow, Joseph, friendly

[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_01]: sleep 66 Alkie Bob, Alex Steven Christopher.

[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Everyone I just mentioned have been supporting this show from 2021 all the way to

[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_01]: 2020, 23.

[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_01]: So thank you all very much for your support of this show and next episode will get everybody

[00:02:29] [SPEAKER_01]: who started spreading the show in 2023 to 2024.

[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Again, thank you everybody for supporting the show and now let's welcome Bart to the show.

[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Hi, buddy.

[00:02:55] [SPEAKER_01]: Seems like only yesterday I was here.

[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_01]: You know what?

[00:02:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm okay with making this into a monthly thing if you are.

[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_01]: It's nice, it's nice to chat, it's nice to chat and see like there's light outside

[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_01]: your window because normally it's midnight your time and today it's six so you still

[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_01]: got some of your evening left on Sunday here.

[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I do, yes.

[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, it's not quite far enough into autumn the clocks have changed and rubbed us

[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_03]: of all of our own.

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_03]: So unlike, yes, it's so bright.

[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so we are here because Bart you decided that you wanted to test drive the Ford

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Explorer EV which when Americans here for to explore, you know, that is a, that is a staple

[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_01]: here in the United States.

[00:03:41] [SPEAKER_01]: But is a EV version?

[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, the Ford explorers are everywhere here.

[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_01]: But the EV version is only in Europe.

[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_01]: So you decided to do test drive and we're going to talk about that today.

[00:03:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so I test drove it because I don't want to buy it.

[00:03:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it could sound silly.

[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_03]: So let me, so the car I want is also not available to you guys.

[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_03]: It is the EV version of the Ford Capri which was a 1970s icon in Europe.

[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_03]: It was basically a family car that was also the sports car.

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_03]: So there was a Ford or sports coupe.

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_03]: It was, it had this amazing, really long bonnet.

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_03]: It's this gorgeous gorgeous car.

[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I always adore them as a kid.

[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_03]: And I went away.

[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess they're just wasn't a Capri anymore after the early 80s.

[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_03]: And they've revived the brand as an EV and they've made it an affordable EV that in

[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_03]: terms of sort of, sort of size and shape and everything.

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_03]: It's very much a competitor to the Polestar 2 and the Tesla Model 3.

[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And as soon as I saw the answer, I wonder what this is.

[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_03]: I want to have a go in this.

[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_03]: And the platform is identical to the Ford Explorer and the two cars are being

[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_03]: released within a few months of each other but the Explorer is going first.

[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_03]: So the Explorer arrived in our dealership this week.

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_03]: I told Ford about a month ago, as soon as you get one of these cars into Ireland, I want

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_03]: to drive it and though we'll be held, I got a phone call.

[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Hey, we have one of these cars.

[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you want to drive it, miss it?

[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yes, I do.

[00:05:17] [SPEAKER_03]: And so the dealer knows why I was driving the Explorer and I asked the dealer.

[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_03]: So how similar is this?

[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_03]: And he said, so you know the way the Model 3 and the Model Y are basically when you

[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_03]: get into them, you need to take a second look to make sure you're in the right one.

[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_03]: So that's what the Explorer and the Capri are like.

[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_03]: They really are a toll version and a sporty version of the same car.

[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay.

[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, this is a good test.

[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_03]: And for release, so there was a teaser video last time I was talking to you which was

[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_03]: very much like a movie trailer.

[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_03]: It was quick cut, quick cut, quick cut, fancy lighting, car racing, going on corner, looking

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_03]: cool but you couldn't really see the car other than, hey, that's cool.

[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_03]: But they released like a six minute interview with the designers and they gave you

[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_03]: a guided tour of the car and you could actually see the insides and you could actually

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_03]: see the outside and they explained all of the detailing and where the inspiration came from.

[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And I got into the Explorer and I immediately felt like I was in the video about the Capri

[00:06:20] [SPEAKER_03]: because the interior looks identical as best as I can tell.

[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_03]: So it was actually a very good comparison which is great.

[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_03]: That was my first bit of deja vu.

[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like wow, this looks just like the video even though I'm a pie and when it's the

[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_03]: pre of it, I'll be down low but yeah.

[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_03]: So look at the same car.

[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_01]: How big is it when you compare it maybe to a model Y?

[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Is it bigger as a smaller?

[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Because a four-explore here is not a small car.

[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I do think it's like five or six seats depending on the setup.

[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, okay so this was definitely five.

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_03]: There was no sign of a seven.

[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_03]: I would say this was not a no bigger than a model Y.

[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_03]: The Explorer.

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, yeah because the one I'm looking at on four-ed to website is maximum seven seating

[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_01]: seven seats which is you know it's a big that's a big vehicle.

[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_03]: I would say go to ford.ie and the very first thing that will show you in your face.

[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_03]: They have it at the very top of their webpage is the European version of the Explorer

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'm very curious to see if you recognize it as anything like what you guys have but I think

[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_03]: it won't be.

[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, it's more futuristic version of what we have here for the United States and I would also say

[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_01]: it has a little bit of that EV or the Hyundai.

[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_01]: No, that's the EV nine.

[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_03]: The EV nine, yeah you're right.

[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_03]: It's way smaller than an EV nine but your absolute right it has it's very reminiscent

[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_03]: that it's front of the EV nine.

[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Also kind of reminds me though of the F 150 lightning just the way I had lightning out and stuff.

[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_03]: But smaller, like way smaller than lightning.

[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah it's it's got it definitely takes some of that design language and moves it over

[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_01]: but it still its own down.

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_03]: It is its own thing and the Capri is like if you see the Capri in profile

[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_03]: it's like a pulsar too where someone rounded all the corners and made it a bit softer.

[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And so you take the basic body shape of the pulsar too and the design language of the Explorer

[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_03]: and you mush them together and you get the Capri.

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I can see that.

[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_01]: I think the Capri and this isn't an insult by any search of the imagination but the Capri is a

[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_01]: little bit of like wallet.

[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Like in the front it looks kind of businessy but as you come around the car

[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_01]: it gets sportier but if you're looking at it dead on from the headlights back

[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_01]: if you're standing direct in front.

[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_01]: It looks a little businessy but then as you come around the car you get more sporty.

[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Especially it's kind of got that wide stance or look of wide stance in the back.

[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah and well one of the things they focused on a lot is sort of the shape of the headlights

[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_03]: and stuff to match the older design language so that black bar between the headlights

[00:09:19] [SPEAKER_03]: front and back is very in keeping with the old design language of the original Capri.

[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_03]: That was a real feature.

[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the original grille for sure.

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: And also the split headlights so front and rear they're both their split headlights.

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.

[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Two pairs of the front above each other and at the back it's the same.

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Well I kind of wish they'd carried over from the Capri which they didn't.

[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_03]: If the original Capri had a very distinctive rise in the middle of the bonnet to make room for

[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_03]: great big engine they shoved into it.

[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_03]: I kind of wish they'd kept a hint of that in the design language of the EV version obviously it would

[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_03]: be pointless so it'd just be slightly more room at the front or something but I don't know

[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_03]: I would like to like to see that bit of the design language come through but nonetheless,

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_03]: I like the Polesare 2's look and this I like more.

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like a refined version of that body shape.

[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_03]: So I'm very happy with it.

[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_03]: And I'll be honest with you the explorer,

[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_03]: I could live with the explorer like if for some reason for cancelled the Capri,

[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_03]: I wouldn't object to the explorer.

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_03]: It's actually a nice car but I did review it with the intention of not buying it so the dealer

[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_03]: skipped over the stuff that isn't in common.

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_03]: So the dealer focused when giving me a tour of the car on what is the same and so we didn't spend time

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_03]: in the boat instead or sorry the trunk as you guys would say and so if because that's going to be different

[00:10:45] [SPEAKER_03]: in the Capri. So I'm coming back when the Capri comes into stock and they have a date it is November

[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_03]: but it went, it was added to their tracking system on Thursday this week

[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_03]: and it now shows as in the factory in Germany so the Capri's are on the production line in Germany

[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_03]: and then he will see them progress from the production line to shipping to Ireland and then he'll

[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_03]: so unlike Polestar these cars are real they're not vaporware that Capri is it may be a

[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_03]: buddy shell with two wheels attached to that this day I don't know but it's it's coming

[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_01]: it's really on the way which is nice. And we should say it the Polestar isn't vaporware it's just

[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_01]: the model that they promised you isn't coming to Ireland at the moment.

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah exactly so they they have had a model for a couple of years now and it's not a bad car

[00:11:33] [SPEAKER_03]: but it's front wheel drive and has quite low range compared to the new model which is real wheel drive

[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and has 600 plus kilometer range and there's a really nice improvement in what they have

[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_03]: but you you theorized last time it was because of the steering wheel being on the Irish side

[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_03]: maybe that's why but either way they won't they don't have the car and they keep on

[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_03]: they keep on changing the date first it was March then it was August now they're talking December

[00:11:58] [SPEAKER_03]: and maybe Q1 2025 it was like oh hang on you know so anyway at least these guys have a date right

[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah the deal is very clear no no no this is coming in November no fapping of biated

[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_03]: isn't the factory now what we'll be hearing November I say okay thank you and let's give

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_01]: a little bit of credit to your dealer for not trying to sell you the Ford Explorer because that's

[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_01]: one of the US dealers do they're like hey we got this you want to come take a look at it totally

[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_01]: understand you don't want to buy this this car I totally understand hey we got one in blue you

[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_01]: like blue right we have one in blue you can only today that's how that would be here in the US

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_02]: the Capri is more expensive okay I did not know that what are the things that's why more like

[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_03]: for those so basically when I spec them up the way I want them which is sort of jacking it all the way

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_03]: up I end up at about 60 thousand for the Capri and 55 thousand for the Explorer

[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_03]: on my budget is 50 to 70 so even the Capri with literally all the bells and whistles

[00:12:58] [SPEAKER_03]: that I could possibly want panoramic roof the whole the whole the whole the whole the whole

[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_03]: tune gallery is still 10th you know it's in the middle of my budget between 50 and 70 so 60 is

[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah sweet spot yeah and the 87 was a little above right when you had it's the 87

[00:13:15] [SPEAKER_03]: if I if I took out the roof and the things I kind of want I could make it just fit at 69

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_03]: 90 something like a crazy and if I put on the roof and the things I really wanted it would go to 72

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah that's fair that's fair okay so let's talk about the your driving experience in the

[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Explorer well so the first thing is I got in and I immediately went oh I recognize this this is

[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_03]: like the video but also it's very like the polls are too and I wonder if that's because they're all

[00:13:52] [SPEAKER_03]: once the inside of a car to be because it's a very large port-trade center console display

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_03]: like a big iPad yeah this is like an iPad pro at this stage that's sitting there in that middle

[00:14:04] [SPEAKER_03]: center console and then you have a clutter free nice dashboard with the a piece behind the

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_03]: steering wheel for the basics it's not a lot of information there but it's you know how fast you're

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_03]: allowed to go and what the next directions are in your turn by turn which is sufficient I think

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_03]: may also have media there if you're playing media I don't know I didn't play media well in the

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_03]: test drive but it's the basics but it's right there in front of you and then you have buttons on

[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_03]: the steering wheel more than on the Tesla but not obnoxiously many and there's one or two buttons

[00:14:43] [SPEAKER_03]: together nice to the right you know between the steering wheel and the door no button bar

[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_03]: very tasteful very nicey laid out very reminiscent of the pollster but I also got massive

[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_03]: deja vu because it's exactly like the ID seven so the ID seven you have a little dashboard behind

[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_03]: the steering wheel and I head up the display and the forward you have the little dashboard behind

[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_03]: steering wheel and head up the display and on the ID seven you have the buttons on the steering wheel

[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_03]: and on the forward you have the buttons on the steering wheel and not just is that the same

[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_03]: but the information in those two places is exactly the same the button layer is identical

[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_03]: and so are the icons and I really for a moment found myself looking at the center of the steering wheel

[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'm moving now blue oval says forward so let's circle what I felt at home I guess is

[00:15:43] [SPEAKER_03]: I know what this is right I know all the buttons do because I just learned how to do this

[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_03]: in the ID seven so I guess that's nice and you then told me afterwards and tell around

[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_03]: well that's because of the same platform part or forward licensed the platform for Volkswagen

[00:15:59] [SPEAKER_03]: okay so that's kind of a nice surprise so for 10,000 euro less I'm getting the same brain

[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_03]: and you know and the head up the display is nice it's the minimal information the dashboard is nice

[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and that center console is way better than what's on the more expensive ID seven

[00:16:16] [SPEAKER_03]: it's a much nicer screen which is interesting a lot of lots of pockets and little cobe holes everywhere

[00:16:23] [SPEAKER_03]: very practical car very practical car and what I really like is that because there's no

[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_03]: transmission or anything running up the bottom of the car there's a lot of space for that center console

[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_03]: and what Volkswagen did with the space was to have two layers where you could reach under into

[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_03]: stuff forwards approach is different so you lift up the armrest and you have a cavernous place where

[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_03]: you can put stuff and then there's two modules in front of that which is one for coffee cobe holders

[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_03]: and to diagonally sloped I teach teachers which is kind of an interesting idea because it

[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_03]: makes them the same with as the coffee copovers and they're just you slide the phone diagonally which

[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_03]: is kind of cool and what I discovered when the dealership me is that those two modules can be removed

[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_03]: so you can have neither one or the other or both of those modules and when you take those out

[00:17:17] [SPEAKER_03]: you have an unimaginably large amount of space in that center console you could put

[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_03]: three big water balls in there or even if you leave in the two modules you can get a laptop in

[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_03]: there so you could safely still away a laptop or two laptops frankly in there which is kind of cool

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_03]: and there's also by default a coin tray that sits on top of the very deep the hole with lots of

[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_03]: space which again is removable so it's very very practical and the other one I thought was really cool

[00:17:47] [SPEAKER_03]: so the the nice big center console screen can be moved so that you can have it at the angle you

[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_03]: want and when you lift it up there's a rubber coated place in there to keep like a keyfob or

[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_03]: you know something that you might need to get into the garage and work or a home or whatever

[00:18:04] [SPEAKER_03]: and it's rubberized with holes still there and it's completely hidden what's put the screen back

[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_03]: down so it's a very practical car. Do you manually move the screen because it looks like

[00:18:16] [SPEAKER_01]: videos that you there's like a there's some mechanism that moves it or do you manually

[00:18:22] [SPEAKER_03]: move it up and down. There's a there's a little tab with the bottom and it sort of it feels like

[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_03]: it's on a monitor arm or something it moves very very easily it just okay just pick it up and move it

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_03]: and yeah so that was that's kind of nice in terms it's just very practical and then

[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_03]: something we noticed on our telegram chat there's a giant big bows speaker in the capri and

[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_03]: that exact same speaker is also in the explorer. It runs across the top of the dash and I'm sure

[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_03]: it's fantastic it's buying an all of some very expensive speaker and in the video you couldn't

[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_03]: really tell how would it be in the way. I mean one of one of the people in the chat was very

[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_03]: concerned you know not a particularly total person I'm not tall either. We know what this be in

[00:19:11] [SPEAKER_03]: my line of sight well no because it's really well sculpted to the dashboard and so actually I think

[00:19:16] [SPEAKER_03]: if you were to project a straight line I think basically the dashboard has been lowered slightly

[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_03]: and the speaker molded to it so actually it's completely not an issue which is great

[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'm sure it's great sound but I didn't I'm not sure what was best audio file but it does

[00:19:33] [SPEAKER_03]: look pretty cool actually so big B&O speaker and the at least in the explorer the panorama

[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_03]: group is amazing and I presumably the same roof in the capri which looks pretty darn nice so

[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_03]: physically speaking it was very nice in there very nice indeed and yeah in terms of what pieces

[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_03]: there were it's the same was what I had in the ID seven which I also liked so that was nice

[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_01]: so then I took it out on the road so let's talk about that because your user interface is

[00:20:06] [SPEAKER_03]: going to be similar yeah I was straight at home I was absolutely straight at home some differences

[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_03]: the color blue played a much bigger role in the icons and stuff but the shape of everything was the

[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_03]: same as what I'd seen before but the color blue was a lot a lot more prominent in the forward than

[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_03]: in the Volkswagen blue basically means there is AI in charge which as a test driver I'm making

[00:20:29] [SPEAKER_03]: you very at home because I'm used to you know if my little side screen is showing things in blue that

[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_03]: means that the AI is doing something and on the forward if something is blue it means that I think

[00:20:39] [SPEAKER_03]: the color for blue they're very eye on the blue cruise that's the one yeah so one blue cruise is

[00:20:46] [SPEAKER_03]: doing its thing it goes blue which made you feel right with home so yeah so on the road I was immediately

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_03]: home because everything was the same as what I got used to in the ID seven and it is it's fast

[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_03]: fast but in the ID seven it is at least as fast as my model 3 and I got to take actually yeah

[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_03]: so it's a rural dealership which is the first time I've gone to a rural dealership instead of

[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_03]: a Dublin-based dealership and it was such a different attitude like the dealer didn't feel any

[00:21:23] [SPEAKER_03]: urge whatsoever to join me for the test drive is like yeah here's the keys off you go you know

[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_03]: oh I'll be 20 minutes at take your time take as long as you're like it's kind of cool so we decided

[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_03]: to go right up the motorway and then onto some of the back roads and then back to the dealership

[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_03]: it's better have joined me this time because it's one more really seriously considering

[00:21:44] [SPEAKER_03]: and before I noticed that I was 10 kilometers near the speed limit barely touched the accelerator

[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_03]: on the motorway oh okay I'm going to need to be very careful in this car but because they

[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_03]: licensed Volkswagen's platform it's that same bloody turn drive twice to get into EV style drive so

[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_03]: you have DNOROS twists on the stock and then you have to twist again to go into what they

[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_03]: called B which is we've turned on region but I still have a lot of region what is still not a

[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_02]: lot B supposed to stand for break so you've drive I know it's stupid like I said it was stupid

[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_03]: in the ID4 it was still stupid in the ID7 and it's still stupid in the Ford okay but that

[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Volkswagen is has made its way into Ford okay it's not very strong region and by default by default

[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_03]: the car behaves like an automatic transmission ice vehicle and my theory is that these legacy

[00:22:49] [SPEAKER_03]: car makers like Ford and Volkswagen they don't see that as a problem they see that as the only

[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_03]: way they're going to transition their existing customers which is many many many of them to an EV

[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_03]: and so by default there's a creeper mode enabled thankfully you can mostly disable it by going in

[00:23:06] [SPEAKER_03]: and putting on the optional hold mode which means when you come to an absolute stop the car will

[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_03]: stay stopped but in stop go traffic it will still do the creep thing which gives you one for

[00:23:18] [SPEAKER_03]: driving at slow speeds it's just the inverse of the one for driving we're used to because you're

[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_03]: basically going on and off the break to drive forward and stuff driving forward but the region is

[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_03]: not very strong and I presume it's not blended breaking thing that the key is and everything else does

[00:23:34] [SPEAKER_03]: where basically the region is there and it is fitting the battery but it's connected to the break

[00:23:38] [SPEAKER_03]: pedal not to letting off the accelerator so I wish it was I wish I've all like I've driven a lot of cars

[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_03]: now there are only two of them and the entirety of planet Earth that I can find that do the proper

[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_03]: test or like thing and that's the test let on the pole star no one else does it everyone else has gone

[00:23:58] [SPEAKER_03]: the sort of the forward route for folks who I can route so yeah it drove extremely well

[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_03]: and once I asked to say I went to wee bit in the default and then I found the first exit of the

[00:24:14] [SPEAKER_03]: motorway pulled in and then popped up the settings menu and started going off off off on right

[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_03]: just sort of toggling through the various settings to really configure the car realistically for me

[00:24:26] [SPEAKER_03]: and once I had tug of the buttons the way I would like to drive the car it was actually very

[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_03]: pleasant drive I will miss test the style true one foot driving and I will be giving feedback

[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_03]: to forwards saying hey self-reupdate folks when we put it to that be mode will you actually give us

[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_03]: full enough region to come to a full stop please but not yet doesn't exist yet I'll give

[00:24:52] [SPEAKER_01]: feedback though yeah for sure how did you like the interface when you were doing that because

[00:24:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I've only driven a mock-y once but I found it very difficult to get around and I've heard

[00:25:04] [SPEAKER_01]: that they've simplified the user interface and when you go into the settings and you're trying to find

[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_01]: specific things I've heard it's much more simple than it then it was when I drove the ID4 which

[00:25:14] [SPEAKER_03]: was a couple years ago admittedly I put it in this way I didn't break out Google no gonna give

[00:25:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I tried to do this in the ironic sex I had to go to Google I couldn't figure out how to make

[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_03]: the car do things without going to Google and in the forward I didn't go to Google and I don't

[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_03]: think I said any not boys get say for it's got it that's fair yeah we took a little while

[00:25:37] [SPEAKER_03]: to figure out it's logic but it's very consistent so once you figure out oh okay this is how

[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_03]: do I think about things I actually search click around very quickly once I rocked the logic and I just

[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_03]: kept tapping things body and I did I did get there so that I guess that means it's a

[00:25:53] [SPEAKER_03]: intuitive right if I could just tap away and get what I wanted for sure for sure how about the ADS system

[00:26:01] [SPEAKER_03]: very good and so because I got to go in the motorway I got to really test it so I guess my

[00:26:06] [SPEAKER_03]: comparison is to a model 3 Tesla with no optional extras so out of the box Tesla give you basic

[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_03]: autopilot which is smart adaptive cruise control and lane assist or lane keeping in fact to

[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_03]: be honest and the forward gives you that same stuff for 1,200 euro but any of them any of the numbers

[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_03]: I've given you includes that optional extra but it's technically an optional extra so you

[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_03]: could pull the price back by about 10k on the prices I gave you earlier if you take all the optional

[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_03]: extras out so you'd lose the ADS you'd lose the motorized tailgate you'd lose the panoramic roof

[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_03]: you'd lose the heat exchanger you'd lose the electronic tow hitch that I'll be adding to them

[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah the option extra as I went for I didn't I didn't choose fancy alloy wheels and I didn't

[00:26:59] [SPEAKER_03]: have to pay extra for my gorgeous blue they have a really nice blue by the way a very electric blue

[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_03]: seems appropriate but no well so the automatic cruise control is very good and like with the

[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Tesla you get to choose how close to follow now in the Tesla we have from 2 to 7 where is this is

[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_03]: from 1 to 5 which is technically the same was just number differently I think in the test it's

[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_03]: car lengths whereas it's just stripes in the Volkswagen interface sorry I call it the Volkswagen

[00:27:29] [SPEAKER_03]: interface because it's identical to what I've been testing in the Volkswagen's before it's

[00:27:33] [SPEAKER_03]: your face and the the the the the the so basically of three modes you have a speed limiter

[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_03]: smart cruise control and cruise control with lane assist or lane keeping sorry you plenty of

[00:27:45] [SPEAKER_03]: lane assist but no it's lane keeping it's full auto steer and so you basically you flick through the

[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_03]: modes and then you get the the blue because blue when it's keeping you in lane and it's really good

[00:27:57] [SPEAKER_03]: like it's that's very it's not jerky or anything like the motorway we were on was very very

[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_03]: windy because it was going around the Irish hills instead of through them and so the car

[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_03]: had to do a lot of work and it didn't seamlessly absolutely seamlessly it was just like Tesla except

[00:28:15] [SPEAKER_03]: it was a button on the steering wheel and said hitting the stock and instead of rolling a wheel

[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_03]: I could go faster and slower with plus minus buttons it's like a deep out on the gaming

[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_03]: controller right so yeah and it was as gentle and it felt like the car wasn't in any way

[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_03]: unsure of itself or jerky or hesitant it felt competent like yeah it felt like the car was

[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_03]: a competent driver not an owner driver it's probably the best way to describe it basically I didn't

[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah that is there's always the goal like you you look at some vehicles like if I was to go to

[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_01]: a Rivian from my model Y one of the concerns that I would have is the eight asks because I'm not

[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_01]: that familiar I'm going to talk with somebody here soon about their Rivian experience but

[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_01]: one of my concerns would be yeah the the is auto pilot whatever they call auto pilot it how

[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_01]: does that compare because they are a Tesla owner yeah and then there's some other things that

[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_01]: they go along with that as well but like I feel confident if I ever went up to a Rivian I'd be

[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_01]: happy with the experience but there are some things that are really like about my Tesla

[00:29:35] [SPEAKER_01]: which the auto pilot I'll use that almost every morning going into work so long as it's not too busy

[00:29:41] [SPEAKER_01]: and I would really hate to lose that ability like I don't I don't need the full self-driving

[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I find that that feature stresses me out more than it helps me but the the auto pilot I really

[00:29:54] [SPEAKER_01]: like that I get in the lane that I'm going to be in and we just go and I'm okay with you know

[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_01]: going to speed limit people in Arizona or not okay with going to speed limit like this oh

[00:30:03] [SPEAKER_03]: buddy I'm okay with that I dial the Tesla to exactly the speed limit and the amount of

[00:30:10] [SPEAKER_03]: frankly generally speaking German student cars behind me they get very cranky and

[00:30:16] [SPEAKER_03]: dangerously at the first opportunity to say but no this is you know I'm traveling at 120 kilometers

[00:30:21] [SPEAKER_03]: in every hairfolk so it's not as if I'm slow with this that's just the speed you like to go here

[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_01]: deal with it but yeah this the speed limit here is 10 miles over the posted speed limit

[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_03]: that's how that's the term it did you do something I know a lot of people who drive like that

[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_01]: some of them maybe my relatives yeah yeah and and sometimes you know I'll find myself because

[00:30:44] [SPEAKER_01]: the model wide is a little bit of a beast and it's comfortable to drive I will find myself going 80

[00:30:51] [SPEAKER_01]: and I oh got it back this down because I shouldn't be doing that yeah easy to do so easy to do

[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_03]: those reverse sensor can't as part of the A does I guess it kind of does doesn't it

[00:31:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean I would imagine it it's all in one of those you know yeah I would imagine that it's probably not

[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_01]: the like Tesla's reverse sensor will auto-park it if you have full self driving which is

[00:31:18] [SPEAKER_01]: quite frankly the best thing ever when it does it it's magic so would it I would yeah I would include that

[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah so what did the first place I saw this was in the BYUDs where you had this fake overhead

[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_03]: view and in the BYUDs it looked obviously fake because you knew it was being made by the side cameras

[00:31:38] [SPEAKER_03]: and they'd like drawn a picture of the car on top whereas with the ID seven it was spectacularly

[00:31:45] [SPEAKER_03]: photorealistic and utterly like major head explodes like how is this possible and of course

[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_03]: it's the same platform so the four did exactly the same thing and the better half was with me this

[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_03]: time and I mean you would what how is it drone photographers so he's always thinking in terms of

[00:32:07] [SPEAKER_03]: like yes it's called image processing it's like but but I know it's great isn't it and

[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_03]: it's maybe so it's really really good in the shows exactly where you're going and it's really easy to

[00:32:18] [SPEAKER_03]: reverse in and maybe the ID seven does one of them about to say as well but I just didn't try it

[00:32:24] [SPEAKER_03]: but I aimed at a parking place and I knew I was gonna miss because I was like I'm completely wrong

[00:32:30] [SPEAKER_03]: to aim at that parking place but hey I'm testing this thing let's have a go and so I have

[00:32:35] [SPEAKER_03]: back towards it's like okay not gonna work I need to go forward and then back again I put it

[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_03]: into drive and it continued to keep the rear view camera up and continued to show me

[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_03]: the projected box behind me so that I could just line myself up while going forward

[00:32:53] [SPEAKER_03]: to be perfect and then just puppet and reverse and drive straight in nice I was such a great

[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_03]: the bear half is like so impressed it is the best reversing cameras I have come across in

[00:33:08] [SPEAKER_03]: the 15 cars a selectrival of this age I was I think the ID seven probably doesn't too because

[00:33:14] [SPEAKER_03]: the same platform but I didn't happen to trigger it but I was really impressed and I'm trying

[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_03]: to find somewhere and I think this also has park assist when I enable all the optional

[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_03]: extras but I can't find a bit of fine print that says it and the dealer didn't push it mind you

[00:33:31] [SPEAKER_03]: the Volkswagen dealers and it's so picky to engage that I never use it so that's the the folks

[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_03]: I can deal with it so it's probably if it's the same platform guessing it's the same here

[00:33:43] [SPEAKER_03]: sure yeah but I say it's so good at the reversing cameras and so I don't think I'm gonna care

[00:33:47] [SPEAKER_03]: and I'm also I've never been used to it so I'm not losing anything I think that's probably

[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_03]: the most important thing just don't lose anything and then you won't miss it yeah what about

[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_03]: you have some caveats listed here you want to talk about those well yeah so because I wasn't

[00:34:03] [SPEAKER_03]: interested in buying this specific car we just we didn't look at certain things right we just

[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_03]: skipped over at the bit of the demo where we would have had a look at the space and the trunk and

[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_03]: so and I didn't even sit in the back seat of that I was probably sure it would have just

[00:34:21] [SPEAKER_03]: back and see his spacious that is back there it looked pretty nice back there but I can't verify it

[00:34:26] [SPEAKER_03]: whereas in the IDC I have when I can tell you it's really spacious back there and I'm sure it's fine

[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_03]: but I get into the back seat when I do the cupri I also didn't have a look at trunk or

[00:34:40] [SPEAKER_03]: front or anything because it's gonna be completely different in the cupri since it's such a different

[00:34:44] [SPEAKER_03]: body shape so again I will look at that in the cupri in a hindsight I should have actually

[00:34:50] [SPEAKER_03]: taken those 30 seconds body so I could tell your audience but I forgot I don't have the better

[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_03]: half as well so I guess we were we were very selfish you thinking of ourselves and this test

[00:35:02] [SPEAKER_01]: was like a car I remember right though there's a height difference between the two of you right

[00:35:07] [SPEAKER_03]: he's still it yeah he's much older yeah I mean the explorer he was very comfortable

[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_03]: but that's why we definitely want to drive the cupri before we commit to buying it because he is tall

[00:35:18] [SPEAKER_03]: and so if he gets it and he bangs his head off the top of the cupri well then it's a rethink

[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't think it will be a problem but we are going to verify that and we're going to verify

[00:35:29] [SPEAKER_03]: that there is room enough in the back for anything we might need before we buy the cupri so those

[00:35:35] [SPEAKER_03]: kind of nitpicky things I will look at when they have the actual car I want to buy in a few

[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_01]: times all right what about your final thoughts you're I don't know do you know Jerry Springer

[00:35:48] [SPEAKER_01]: are you familiar with the Jerry Springer's final thoughts I oh I don't know if I can be as

[00:35:53] [SPEAKER_02]: profound buddy but so well we didn't have quite quite the dumpster fire for this show that

[00:36:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Jerry Springer normally had on to wrap it up with some moral lessons so I was going to say what

[00:36:05] [SPEAKER_02]: I smashed actually this is my off a session smash anything yeah so just I guess to put it in the

[00:36:12] [SPEAKER_03]: context my intention is to get a car with 600 kilometers or more range it with a tow bar and not

[00:36:20] [SPEAKER_03]: losing too much of the luxuries I'm used to at my Tesla and to have it come in between 50 and 70,000

[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_03]: euro and if I take the cupri and I put absolutely everything on it I want

[00:36:33] [SPEAKER_03]: I just don't make these 600 kilometers it comes in at 595 if I add the panoramic roof and

[00:36:42] [SPEAKER_03]: the automatic lift gate which is what you get when you click to the premium instead of the base

[00:36:45] [SPEAKER_03]: trim and I don't care I'll take the five kilometers off and have my shiny roof if I actually

[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_03]: if I don't do that I get 623 which isn't too bad and the explorer is 603 with all the bells and

[00:37:02] [SPEAKER_03]: this was attached so the explorer is strange you know slightly more range than the capri I would have thought

[00:37:08] [SPEAKER_03]: you know put a put a smaller and more squad by the on an I thought it might get slightly more

[00:37:14] [SPEAKER_03]: range but it's actually so likely less range but yeah whatever and the explorer with all the bells

[00:37:20] [SPEAKER_03]: and whistles comes in at 55k euro which is really not bad and with all the bells and whistles

[00:37:28] [SPEAKER_03]: the capri comes in at 60k so unless something really surprising happens in November

[00:37:36] [SPEAKER_03]: I am pretty darn sure for it is getting my money the only caveat and that is if Polster

[00:37:42] [SPEAKER_03]: offer me a preorder with a specific date they will still get my money because they said how

[00:37:50] [SPEAKER_03]: the one foot breaking there they're still a little bit more Tesla ish but unless their preorder page

[00:37:56] [SPEAKER_03]: has an actual date I've done just a many more so realistically I don't see that happening between

[00:38:03] [SPEAKER_03]: now in November nothing in my experience with Polster tells me they're going to surprise me by

[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_03]: having the car early so I think it's 75% chance that unless something really unexpected happens in

[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_03]: November a shiny blue capri will be sitting in our driveway by new year's day 2025. Nice nice

[00:38:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I wonder with the Polster because I've been doing a lot of stories on the import duties that

[00:38:31] [SPEAKER_01]: they are tariffs in the US is put in and Europe I wonder if that's if they're doing that because

[00:38:37] [SPEAKER_01]: they know you know the price is going to have to be higher they've been building this car for

[00:38:44] [SPEAKER_01]: X amount of years now they can build it cheaper they don't have to charge as much more to cover

[00:38:49] [SPEAKER_01]: those import duties or you wouldn't be charged not the way that works exactly but you wouldn't be charged

[00:38:56] [SPEAKER_01]: so wonder if that's part of their their thing. One of the things that not for this go around
