[00:00:02] [SPEAKER_02]: We at Vertex know that the speed of global trade is increasing, which makes a control administration more complex.
[00:00:08] [SPEAKER_02]: And their company's own systems are not designed to handle this control complexity.
[00:00:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Here we are using our platform to enable continuous compliance.
[00:00:19] [SPEAKER_02]: This way you get more transparency, more accuracy and more trust in your control data.
[00:00:24] [SPEAKER_02]: You want more continuous compliance experiences? Then visit Vertex.ink.com.
[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_01]: The best selling EV of all time. Norway is, if it's not the biggest country for electric vehicles, it's one of the biggest for sure.
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_01]: And in related news, Model Y is closing in on the F-150 and is about to surpass it as being the best selling vehicle in the US.
[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_01]: So good on the Model Y, selling a lot of cars.
[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's see, Tesla started rolling out FSD version 12.5.5 to Cybertruck.
[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Initially this is going out to employees and Tesla's early access folks.
[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_01]: But for those of you who own a Cybertruck and have been waiting for full self-driving to be enabled, won't be much longer.
[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure the 10 plus months for a lot of folks seems like forever.
[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_01]: But it's closer than it was. Let's put it that way.
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_01]: A few weeks ago, Tesla published its roadmap for full self-driving and September's goals were pretty lofty.
[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_01]: So Tesla's head of AI, Ashok Alaswami, actually I don't know if that's his title or not.
[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_01]: But he did show the Tesla team a little love for hitting their September 2024 goals.
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_01]: If you're not familiar, here are the goals that they had for September.
[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_01]: With version 12.5.2 their goal was to improve the miles between interventions by three times.
[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_01]: They also wanted to have full self-driving version 12.5.2 on AI3 computers.
[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you're not familiar with what AI3 is, this is exactly what hardware 3 is.
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_01]: They just changed it from AI3 or from hardware 3 to AI3 hardware 4 to AI4.
[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_01]: They also wanted to release actually smart summon or ASS.
[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Allison and Steve Sheridan got their update. They haven't tested it yet but we'll report back once they have.
[00:03:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Cybertruck will get AutoPark and it did.
[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Eye-tracking with sunglasses, end to end network on the highway, and then releasing full self-driving to Cybertruck.
[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_01]: And we've already covered that.
[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_01]: So this is September 30th as I record this episode and we are in the last day of September.
[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_01]: So they've completed all of these goals.
[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_01]: So congratulations to the AI team.
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Now October, a little less ambitious maybe.
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how hard these things are. The list is much shorter. Let's put it this way.
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_01]: In October their goals are un-park, park and reverse in full self-driving.
[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_01]: With version 13 their plan is to improve miles between necessary interventions by six times.
[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_01]: September was three times so they want to make a six times improvement on that.
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_01]: And in November they're looking at getting FSD approved in Europe and China.
[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: But of course that's all based on regulatory approval and not a lot when it comes to the team.
[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Like the team has to get those ready but once they're submitted it's up to the regulatory authority to approve that.
[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_01]: But this is encouraging. Tesla does not have a great reputation for shipping software or hardware on time.
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_01]: You know vehicles that kind of thing which is mostly Elon's fault because he does set some pretty unrealistic goals when it comes to timeline.
[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_01]: But again congrats to the AI team. I think that's pretty cool.
[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Alright this is our final Tesla story and we're going to talk about Tesla Germany.
[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_01]: This story features unions and Tesla management. I am going to spare you the union bits of it.
[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just going to talk about what's going on and Tesla management's answer to it.
[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I want to do something a little bit different with this story.
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I would like your feedback and I'm going to play your feedback on the show.
[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you don't mind I would like if you're interested in participating in this.
[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Record your thoughts in audio form and then send them to me.
[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'll put them on the show as long as they're clean and coherent and make sense.
[00:05:45] [SPEAKER_01]: If we're just rambling I can't do that but you know you don't have to be perfect at this.
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I certainly am not and you all listen to me.
[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_01]: But record your thoughts send them to me and I'll put them on the show.
[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Now if you're really shy and you're like wow I don't want to put my voice on audio because it sounds weird.
[00:06:04] [SPEAKER_01]: But I'm with you. My voice sounds terrible I think.
[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_01]: That's fine. You can email me your thoughts and I'll assign an AI voice to your words.
[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_01]: And you don't get to choose which AI voice I assigned.
[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_01]: So I might decide it's a funny voice or maybe an angry voice.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_01]: You know you do what you want to do on that.
[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_01]: You can email me bodi-b-o-d-i-e at 918-digital if you're interested in doing this.
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway back to the story here.
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_01]: More than 24 workers at Gigaburlin have been drawing a paycheck for the last nine months but they're not going to work.
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_01]: They're claiming that they're too sick to work.
[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_01]: And they've been submitting a doctor's note every six months.
[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_01]: So Tesla sent managers out to the home of these 24 plus employees with the goal of checking on them.
[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Now this isn't a hey we just want to make sure that you're okay kind of as it according to the site manager.
[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_01]: They were making sure that these employees weren't abusing Germany's generous labor protection laws
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_01]: and just calling out you know sick every six weeks with a doctor's note and saying I'm not unable to work
[00:07:17] [SPEAKER_01]: but I'm still going to draw a paycheck which on one hand I can understand.
[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Tesla's management argued that the call-out time for their full-time employees was really high.
[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Like just to give you an example contract employees that work with Tesla full-time employees
[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_01]: but aren't full-time employees call out 2% of the time whereas full-time employees,
[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Tesla employees who work the late shift or Fridays call out 5% of the time
[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_01]: and you know it's not uncommon for Tesla to have 15% all the way up to 30% of the plant
[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_01]: not show up because they called out sick.
[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_01]: So Gigaburlin's plant manager said that home visits were a common practice in the industry
[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_01]: and Tesla wanted to appeal to the employees work ethic to come back to work.
[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Now this is what I would like you to send me if you don't mind.
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_01]: What are your thoughts on this?
[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I hesitate to give you a prompt other than what are your thoughts?
[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to lead you in any direction.
[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_01]: So you can again email me bodi b-o-d-i-e at 918digital.com.
[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Alright that concludes our Tesla segment.
[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Real quick I want to mention that we have a Patreon and a ACAS Plus subscription
[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_01]: if you want to get rid of the ads.
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_01]: So what you do is go to patreon.com forward slash kilowatt or support kilowatt dot com
[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_01]: or if you don't like Patreon you can look in the show notes
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_01]: and there's a link for ACAS Plus
[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_01]: and you can sign up for as little as a dollar and get rid of all the ads
[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_01]: and all of the money that you contribute goes right back into the show
[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_01]: none of the money goes into my own pocket to pay for bills
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_01]: and yeah like I said you get rid of the ads
[00:09:09] [SPEAKER_01]: which is probably the biggest benefit for as little as a dollar.
[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure if I'm the only podcast out there right now that still has the dollar tier
[00:09:17] [SPEAKER_01]: but I do know there's not very many of us out there for sure.
[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's move on to the rest of the EV news around the world.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_01]: This is less of a news article and more of a heads up.
[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_01]: You know there's some terrible hurricanes happening in the southeast part of the United States.
[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_01]: EVs are getting flooded.
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_01]: Saltwater is not good for your battery pack.
[00:09:43] [SPEAKER_01]: If saltwater gets into your battery pack that could cause a battery fire.
[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you are in one of these areas and you suspect that you might have ingress
[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_01]: of saltwater in your battery I would just err on the side of caution
[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and take the appropriate measures like not parking your car in the garage
[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_01]: parking it away from potential exposures like your house or other vehicles
[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_01]: just until you can confirm that there hasn't been any damage to the vehicle from the saltwater.
[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's move on and we've talked about this a little bit this brand.
[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Sony and Honda partnered on an EV brand called Afila.
[00:10:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Afila? F-A-F-E-E-L-A.
[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_01]: The Afila brand even though it hasn't produced a vehicle yet has adopted the NACS connector
[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_01]: which is good news.
[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I saw this car at CES. It's a unique looking vehicle.
[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what the final product is going to look like but it looked neat at the time.
[00:10:44] [SPEAKER_01]: We don't know much about what the Afila EV is going to look like
[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_01]: but we're going to find out more in 2025 because you'll be able to pre-order it here in the United States
[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_01]: in the first half of 2025 and then you'll get deliveries in spring of 2026 here in the United States
[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_01]: and if you live in Japan it'll be 2026, the second half of 2026 if you live in Japan.
[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Moving on we have a Japanese company operated in China.
[00:11:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Mazda opened the pre-order page for the new Mazda EZ6 EV.
[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's Echo Z if you're keeping track.
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_01]: 6 EV. This is actually quite a nice looking vehicle.
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_01]: From the exterior it definitely looks like a Mazda so nothing to add there.
[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_01]: When you look at it you go yep that's a Mazda. You don't even need to look at the badging.
[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_01]: So let's move on to the interior. Leather seats in every single trim.
[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Now think what you want about leather seats and you're not being good for the environment.
[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_01]: We're killing a cow for the leather, all that good stuff.
[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm on board. My last Mazda had leather seats and they were really nice and really comfortable.
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Not because they were leather just Mazda makes a good seat so you got good seats even in the base trim.
[00:12:02] [SPEAKER_01]: The car features a Sony audio sound system and 64 color ambient lighting which I think is really cool.
[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_01]: And I know Tesla does I think in the Model 3 performance but I really wish my car had that for no other reason than I just think it's neat.
[00:12:19] [SPEAKER_01]: There's a nice big 11 inch instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and then another again big instrument cluster in the center for the infotainment screen.
[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Another thing I should have mentioned this with the seats but another thing that's interesting that the seats do is they are nearly lay flat seats.
[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you're in the front seat you can almost lay completely flat to take a nap while you're charging or if you just need a break.
[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_01]: While you're laying flat you can look up at the big beautiful panoramic glass roof above.
[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Moving on to the powertrain you're looking at a it's going to be single motor in the base model.
[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_01]: 190 kilowatts or around 254 horsepower.
[00:13:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Top speed of 170 kilometers an hour which equals out to 105 miles per hour which is pretty fast.
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_01]: This is where I'm a little skeptical to be honest with you.
[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_01]: The car has two battery pack options 56 kilowatt hour and 68 kilowatt hour.
[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_01]: According to Mazda they're claiming that will give you a range of 480 kilometers with the 56 kilowatt hour battery pack or 600 kilometers with the 68 kilowatt hour battery pack.
[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_01]: That's 298 miles or 372 miles which really good numbers.
[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm skeptical you know that this car is actually getting those numbers.
[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Every country has their own way of calculating range so maybe in China they can actually hit that number theoretically but in reality I don't know what it's going to actually look like.
[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_01]: But the starting price is below $25,000.
[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_01]: So if this car is able to come close to any of the features that I talked about you know there is a lot of value packed in that $25,000 vehicle for sure.
[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Now initially it's going to be released in China but I'm sure that other countries will follow.
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_01]: You know I think we can all agree that EV affordability is an issue.
[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_01]: We're seeing EV prices come coming down a little bit but by and large the EVs are still pretty expensive except in places like China which we just talked about.
[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_01]: According to JD Power the average EV purchase is approximately $13,000 more than your typical ICE vehicle and the average cost of an EV is about $58,000 which is you know expensive.
[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_01]: So automakers really have two issues here.
[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_01]: One they need to entice the people who can actually afford EVs to purchase them over an ICE vehicle right pull that trigger and buy the by the vehicle.
[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_01]: And then the other one is lowering the cost of EVs so more people can afford them which is difficult but not impossible to do but it's definitely harder than automakers thought it would be for sure.
[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_01]: So what can automakers do in the meantime to make EVs more appealing to those who can afford them?
[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_01]: So Ford and Chevy have thoughts on this. They have a plan I should say.
[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_01]: Let's start with Chevy. Chevy right now is dropping the starting price of the Chevy Blazer EV to $45,995 and this is a front wheel drive vehicle no word on range as of yet.
[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_01]: That will be available next year but we're looking under $46,000 for Chevy Blazer EV entry model.
[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_01]: All of the Blazer trims actually are getting a modest range and horsepower increase as well as a little bit of a price cut which is nice to hear.
[00:16:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Now that's great but not everybody can afford a $46,000 car so the even more affordable 2025 Chevy Equinox EV LT is finally getting delivered.
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_01]: So the EV LT Equinox starts at $35,000 but tax credits so you can actually get that for $27,000 with the tax credits which is a really good price for a brand new EV.
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And the Equinox EV LT has over 300 miles of range it's right around 319.
[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_01]: The downside is it doesn't have the best charging capabilities. It's 150 kilowatts of DC fast charging and that will get you about 77 miles of range in 10 minutes so not as slow as the bolt but not as fast as some of these other vehicles.
[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_01]: The EV LT is also front wheel drive but it does come with this beautiful 11 inch digital cluster behind the steering wheel instrument cluster and then a big old 17.7 inch infotainment screen.
[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Again just like the Mazda EZ6 there's a lot of value packed in this car so if you're interested in a new EV under $30,000 with the tax credit definitely check out the Equinox EV LT.
[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Now finally GM is also putting on a series of EV training workshops in the United States to help dealers and sales people understand GM's EV offerings.
[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_01]: This makes a lot of sense so in the classes employees of these dealerships will get to drive General Motors EVs but they're also going to get to drive EVs from third party automakers.
[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Currently they've already held classes in New York, Texas and Atlanta and there are some upcoming classes in Nevada and Indiana and more to come.
[00:18:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And if this all works out really well in 2024 GM said that they may extend the classes to 2025 if there's enough demand.
[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_01]: As you can imagine the overall goal of these classes is to dispel misconceptions about EVs and give correct and proper information to the sales folks.
[00:18:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And then educate people on the charging infrastructure and how to charge an EV range and GM's got some cold weather technology and they can demonstrate with that.
[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And then they'll have cost comparisons with ICE vehicles and I'm sure other EV vehicles as well.
[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_01]: But the thing that I thought EV vehicles, I think that's maybe redundant not how I think it is.
[00:18:57] [SPEAKER_01]: But what I thought was like the coolest thing is they're going to allow dealership employees to drive General Motors EVs and EVs from third party automakers.
[00:19:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Now I did say that but I skipped past it really quick.
[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I think this is great.
[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a great way to let your sales folks become familiar with Teslas and the Ford Mach-E's and so on and so forth.
[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_01]: So that when they're trying to sell a car to somebody and they're like, well, I really like that the Hyundai Ionic 5 has these three features.
[00:19:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Now the salesperson at that dealership is familiar with this vehicle and can, you know, mount their sales pitch as to why you should buy a GM EV over a Hyundai EV for instance.
[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_01]: So I think this is really smart on GM's part.
[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Now for Ford, Ford has a similar but different plan starting on October 1st.
[00:19:58] [SPEAKER_01]: If you buy a new Ford EV, Ford will be giving you a free home charger.
[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_01]: This is a part of Ford's new Power Promise.
[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_01]: The goal, again, is to correct misconceptions about electric vehicles.
[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_01]: So Ford's analytics suggests that potential Ford buyers who are on the fence about buying an EV have concerns about range, cost and quality concerns.
[00:20:24] [SPEAKER_01]: So with Ford's Power Promise, the company, I don't like Ford, Ford Power Promise.
[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Not my great, not, I don't let a love the name.
[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, the Ford Power Promise is focusing on five different areas.
[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_01]: So range, charging, battery health, home charging and timing.
[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_01]: So for range, this is kind of the overcoming misconceptions or educating because there are trims of the F-150 lighting and Mach-E that offer over 300 miles of range.
[00:20:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Now they're more expensive, but they do have that ability.
[00:21:03] [SPEAKER_01]: The next area was charging and we're specifically talking about charging outside of your home.
[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_01]: So Ford EV owners have access to over 75,000 EV chargers in the United States and that includes Tesla's superchargers.
[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Now in the article that I read and some of the other ones that I read as well, they didn't say exactly how many of those 75,000 chargers were DC fast chargers.
[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_01]: But at this point, I think there are enough chargers in the United States where people really don't need to worry as much as they did maybe 40 years ago.
[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Right? And then we have battery health.
[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_01]: So Ford is going to give you an eight year 100,000 mile battery warranty to kind of ease you into buying an EV.
[00:21:49] [SPEAKER_01]: So if you keep your car for eight years and you're not planning on driving 100,000 miles in that time, great.
[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_01]: You've got a warranty on your battery for that entire time.
[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And I think this is an easy thing for Ford to do because it's turning out that batteries in most cases maybe aren't degrading as fast as we once thought they were.
[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_01]: And they're actually holding up better than the experts thought they would way back in the day.
[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_01]: And then home charging.
[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_01]: So Ford is actually going to give you a free charger and will cover the install cost for the charger to be installed in your garage on the side of the house wherever you want it.
[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_01]: That is great. They're going to use Q Merit for the install.
[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I used Q Merit when I installed my charger and they're really easy to work with.
[00:22:41] [SPEAKER_01]: And then Ford pointed out that it's really nice to wake up with a completely charged battery in the morning and not have to ever go to the gas station.
[00:22:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Every now and again you might have to go to a DC fast charger if you're traveling.
[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_01]: But by and large, you don't have to go to the gas station unless you want to drink or snack.
[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_01]: And their final area that they're going to be concentrating on is timing.
[00:23:03] [SPEAKER_01]: This little bit doesn't make as much sense. I would maybe call it support, but their plan is to have 24 seven EV support along with roadside assistance.
[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_01]: So you're never stranded.
[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_01]: And if you have a question, you can call somebody and get your question answered no matter what time of the day it is or if it's a holiday or whatever.
[00:23:25] [SPEAKER_01]: So I support these plans by both of these companies.
[00:23:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I think we're going to see other legacy automakers doing something similar as they release their EVs, but overall good stuff from Ford and GM.
[00:23:41] [SPEAKER_01]: All right everybody that is it for me this episode.
[00:23:44] [SPEAKER_01]: If you want to email me and send me your thoughts on Tesla Germany sending employees to people's houses, you can do so.

[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_00]: The platform we used before Shopify had regularly needed updates that sometimes led to the fact that the shop didn't work.
[00:24:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Our Nemo Boards shop finally makes a good figure on the mobile device and the illustrations on the boards come much clearer about what's important and what makes our brand.
